At Coppice Primary School we like to encourage our pupils to take on different aspects of responsibility within the school. This page explains the different opportunities available to the children.

School Council

Two children from each class in Year 1 & 2 then one child from each class in Key Stage 2 are elected by their peers to the School Council each year. Members represent their class in many of the decisions that affect school life. They meet on a regular basis and have had meetings with the Chair of Governors and kitchen staff.  They also meet with the School Council from Langley Special School (located on the school site) when joint decisions are required. They take time to feedback to their class about decisions made and also collect the viewpoint of their classmates on a number of issues.

They have been responsible for how the outside area has developed and spend time considering which charities should be supported by the different fundraising activities that take place in school.

Head Girl/Boy

Four children from Year 6 are elected each term by the staff to represent the school as head and deputy head girls and boys.

Whilst in office, they are the ambassadors for the school and carry out duties accordingly. They show prospective parents and visitors around the school, are role models for other children, help to present the weekly certificates in assembly and represent the school as members of Four Oaks Youth (a group of children from all the schools in Four Oaks who take responsibility for promoting the good name of local children).

Friends Against Bullying - FAB

Children at the end of Year 5 apply to become members of FAB in preparation for when they become Year 6. They receive training to become mediators on the playground to help support other children with any disagreements that they may have. They also help support children on the playground at Langley School and in the school Nurture Group.

Peer Mentors

A group of year 6 and 5 children act as peer mentors working with younger children in the school. They support the children in developing friendships and helping them to develop their own problem solving skills.

Rights Respecting Steering Group

This group is made up of children from year 1 to year 6.  They meet with other stakeholders within school to help drive forward the UNICEF Rights Respecting Award.  This focuses on the Rights of the Child.

Librarians

A team of children from year 5 & 6 help to maintain the Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 library.  They are in charge of maintaining the books and the library. They support the teachers by providing relevant books for their topics.  They create displays to promote reading and recommend books to other children. The librarians help at the annual book fayre and offer recommendations to parents and children visiting the fayre.  They are also part of the decision making when new books are ordered.

Tech Team

A team of children from Year 5 have been trained to set up and run the technical equipment in the hall.  This includes the projector and the sound and light system.  They support teachers during their assemblies as well as class assemblies and they work on the school show.

House Captains

Coppice has four houses:

• Wyndley
• Blackroot
• Bracebridge
• Longmoor

House Captains, from Year 6, are elected by their houses at the start of each year and supported by captains from Year 2.

They are responsible for monitoring and collecting the house points earned by the children. They promote excellent behaviour and act as role models for the other children in the school.  They also help to organise and run a wide range of house competitions at lunchtime which run throughout the year.  Previous house competitions have included: ten-pin bowling, penalty shoot-out, a maths challenge, spelling, noughts and crosses, archery and a house quiz.  They lead house assemblies each term and help to prepare their house for the biggest house event of the year – Sports Day.
